Why Restrictions Exist

Countries may restrict Australian tourists for several reasons:

Security concerns and armed conflict
Political tensions
Strict border control policies
Limited diplomatic relations
Public health or emergency measures
Concerns about foreign influence or espionage

In other cases, the Australian Government may discourage travel because it cannot provide adequate consular assistance if something goes wrong.

A “Do Not Travel” warning does not always make travel illegal, but it indicates that the risks are severe and that government assistance may be limited.
